Naturlig biotop

Föredrar klipp och sten botten. Förekommer enbart i Nicaragua främst Lago Nicaragua, Lago Jiola och Lago Managua.

Föda

I naturen lever den av den föda som den hittar när den gräver i bottensubstratet insekter, kräftdjur, snäckor, larver och räkor men även småfisk. I akvarium äter den vad som bjuds.

Könsskillnad

Hanen blir längre och något kraftigare än honan.

Akvariemiljö

Föredrar ett akvarium inrett med sand och sten. På grund av sin aggressivitet så hålls de lämpligast i ett eget akvarium, i alla fall när det är lekdags.

Beteende & lek

Mycket aggressiv, särskilt vid lek. Substratlekare som lägger sin rom, som kan vara runt 600-700 st, på en i förväg putsad sten eller rot.

Allmänt

I akvarium så krymper ofta de tjocka läpparna, en förklaring kan vara att i naturen så irriteras läpparna och svullnar på grund av de vulkaniska bergarter som den bearbetar för att komma åt föda. Labiatus betyder stor läpp. Färgvarianterna är många, från vit till röd samt guldgula, och ibland även med inslag av svarta markeringar. A. labiatus kan ibland förväxlas med A. citrinellus, A. labiatus har en spetsigare mun samt att den inte får någon pannpuckel.
